Requirements

English

This course involves reading and undertaking a range of written assessments, as well as engaging in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication. As such, entry to the course requires the successful completion of English to Year 10 level.

If you haven't successfully completed English at Year 10 level, you can demonstrate equivalency through one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a Nationally Recognised Training qualification at Certificate III level or higher; or
  • 3 years relevant industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication

Practical task

You will be asked to complete specific tasks outlined in the assessments. You will need to find a site that will allow you to undertake the tasks.

The work-based project should be at:

A construction site (see under ‘White card’ on this page for more information). You will be coached and given advice on locating and approaching builders in their local area

The licensed builder that you use will need to have the following tools on-site:

  • Hand saw
  • Hand plane
  • Chisels
  • Electric plane
  • Electric drill
  • Circular saw
  • Nail gun
  • Air compressor
  • While it is not mandatory to enter this course, you may be required to wear steel-capped boots and personal protective equipment when on a construction site. This will be up to the discretion of the builder/ business owner and any equipment or gear, if required, will need to be purchased/ sourced by you. 

White card

If you decide to complete the practical tasks of this course on a construction site, you will be required to have a white card.

People who need a white card include:

  • Site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and tradespeople
  • People who access operational construction zones (unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person)
  • Workers whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones
  • The white card can be obtained online or face to face through a Registered Training Provider.

The White Card is not offered by Open Colleges. Students will need to get this at their own expense.

You can also choose to pay 50% of your total course fees upon enrolment and the balance on a Payment Plan.  When you do, you’ll benefit from 50% of the standard Pay in Full discount (unless otherwise advertised).

You can choose to pay for your course in weekly or fortnightly instalments. By paying in instalments, you can schedule your payments around your regular outgoings and get ahead without breaking the bank. Open Colleges payment plans are interest-free.

Jeffrey Halpin has been delivering training and assessment to the construction and WHS industries for over 20 years and been in the construction industry for nearly 45 years. He brings with him a wealth of experience covering all aspects of the construction industry including design, construction, energy rating and building compliance.
