Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work as a Marketer? Well, read this comprehensive guide to take a look at what a day in the life of a marketing professional typically involves. Plus, discover what skills you will need, to move forward in this exciting career.

Your daily outlook

According to Job Outlook research, there are currently over 74,800 Australians working as Advertising and Marketing Professionals, sometimes called Marketing Consultants or Strategists. It is a very large occupation sector, with excellent growth predictions of over 53,000 new job openings in the next 5 years. While Marketers do work all over Australia, it’s interesting to note that nearly half of them are based in New South Wales.

As a Marketer, you can expect to earn a decent salary of around $1,346 per week. This is above the ‘all jobs’ average in Australia. Most marketers work an average of 39 hours per week, with 78% of people working full-time hours and with unemployment rates well below the national average.

The age profile of Marketers is relatively young, with an average age of 34. In fact, a large number of Marketers fall into the 25–34 category. Meanwhile, 60% of marketing specialists in Australia are also women.

Usually, a Bachelor’s Degree or higher is required to work in this field, and 5 years of work experience is often desired. Nearly 50% of current Marketers have a Bachelor’s degree and 17% have Postgraduate degrees, which are much higher than the national job averages.

Marketing professionals work across most industries, however, the majority work in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, Manufacturing, and Retail Trade.

Marketing is a very broad field that includes many different roles. It is quite common to specialise in a specific area of marketing though, such as digital (or online) marketing, social media marketing, or traditional marketing.

Day-to-day tasks

As a Marketing professional, you will develop and execute plans and strategies to help companies promote their products, services or brand, and ultimately drive sales. Generally, tasks include:

  • Communicating with managers/clients to understand the marketing needs and objectives
  • Creating a strategy to implement these objectives
  • Planning, developing and executing marketing and advertising campaigns in order to reach certain objectives, usually related to sales or brand awareness
  • Coordinating the production of marketing campaigns, including all materials. This can involve liaising with copywriters, designers, brand experts, media departments, PR, all while operating within potentially tight time and budget constraints
  • Presenting strategies and ongoing campaign progress to managers/clients
  • Tracking and analysing data to improve and optimise marketing campaigns
  • Understanding, interpreting and predicting future trends in the marketing field, as well as in the businesses own market
  • Commissioning and planning market research to understand the market and explore new market opportunities for services and products
  • Supporting business growth and development by implementing marketing policies and programs across multiple departments

No matter what area of Marketing you’re interested in, characteristics that employers are always looking for include strong interpersonal and organisational skills. Excellent communication skills, whether via telephone, email or through presentations, are absolutely crucial too.

The main demands of the job are that you should be outcome and results-driven and able to see a project through from beginning to end. You’ll also need to be comfortable with working in teams, as most Marketers are part of one or many different teams depending on the projects at hand. Being comfortable with computers, email and different tech platforms (including social media) is crucial because marketing is increasingly digital.

Working as a Marketer can be quite demanding, but equally rewarding for people who enjoy using their creativity to come up with complex strategies and then executing them. Marketers should be happy to work under time pressure and be able to meet strict deadlines on a day-to-day basis.
