Cyber Security: Get A Head Start In A Thriving New Industry
More and more elements of everyday life are taking place online, from smart watches that track your activity, light bulbs that can turn on and off via voice control, to self-driving cars and advanced home security systems. We are placing more trust and private information online than ever before.
But who's protecting all this sensitive information? For large corporations and organisations, their digital footprint includes more than just their data, but also their customer data and sensitive information that could be exploited if placed in the wrong hands.
Cybersecurity professionals are the last line of defence against malicious attacks that can not only bring businesses and their operations to a halt but also compromise our critical infrastructure and expose the huge amount of sensitive data we share online every day.
Growing Threats Mean a Growing Industry
Unfortunately, cyber-attacks are increasing in both intensity and frequency. They’re no longer just email phishing scams and password leaks. Cyber-attacks are also growing in sophistication, which means the demand for skilled Cybersecurity specialists is growing rapidly.
The great news for workers is that estimates from the Australian Computer Society (ACS) anticipate Australia needs an additional 20,000 cybersecurity professionals to meet the needs of businesses and governments.
The Most In-Demand Industries and Roles
When crunching the numbers, it's easy to see why cybersecurity professionals are in such demand. According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre, they received over 84,700 reports of cybercrime from 2024 to 2025. What’s even more interesting to note is that most cybercrime goes unreported, so the true number could be much higher. This significant need for cybersecurity means there are opportunities at almost every level and across almost all industries for professionals with the skills to protect businesses and organisations from online threats.
According to ACS, the top five industries looking for cybersecurity talent include:
- Professional, scientific or technical services
- Public administration and safety
- Healthcare and social assistance
- Financial and insurance services
- Education and training
Some of the most in-demand roles across all industries are for Network Engineers, Cybersecurity Analysts and Solutions Architects. Companies are looking for specific skills in cybersecurity, including information privacy, firewall, incident response and security requirements analysis.
