Why graphic design is important for a business’s success

Post by Open Colleges on August 19th, 2020

The right kind of branding is crucial to any business’s success. Branding covers everything from an organistion’s mission statement to the way they interact with their target audience on social media. It must be strong, consistent and authentic in order to be successful.

Graphic design is an incredibly important aspect of marketing and advertising. When it comes to boosting your brand’s image, reputation, saliency and sales, choosing the right kind of media and images can make or break your brand. This goes for logos, ads, web design and product design and packaging.

Are you a Small Business Owner, a professional Marketer, or a Graphic Designer?

Then read on to find out about the importance of graphic design in marketing and advertising, and how it can make or break a business.

Strong branding is necessary for every business’s success. And graphic design is a pivotal element of branding.

Make a great first impression

Effective graphic design can leave a lasting impression on your target audience, and will help them to remember you the next time their in the market for your particular product or service. This could be a digital ad, a print ad, a flyer, your website, your shopfront, or anything else you can think of (hence why it’s so important to make sure you’ve accounted for every little detail – you never know where your audience’s first impression might be).

On the other hand, if their first impression of your brand is not a positive one, then they’re unlikely to ever think of you again. They’ll scroll right past your over-stimulating Instagram ad, they’ll scrunch your flyer up and throw it in the bin, or immediately bounce out of your badly designed website.

Strong, consistent design is key

Even if you have the most amazing product on the planet, people aren’t going to pay attention if your website is outdated and unresponsive, your ads look unappealing, and your logo is messy or doesn’t seem to relate to your brand.

This is where the importance of graphic design is made especially obvious. If you’re a small business owner, hiring a professional Graphic Designer to help create your brand’s logo and ads is a worthwhile investment.

Strong, eye-catching design can boost your brand’s reputation by lending credibility, and will also help to create a link between your brand your customers. Every time they see your logo, a social media post, or an ad, they’ll instantly recognize that it’s your brand.  And having a Graphic Designer to create a customised look and feel for your brand will work wonders for you, instead of just relying on stock images.

One part of the role of a Graphic Designer working in marketing or advertising is to create unique, original, custom content for brands.

Every little detail counts

If you’re selling a physical product, think about the packaging your products come in. Is it helping to sell your product? Does it make your product stand out? Again, a Graphic Designer (or, if we’re getting specific, a Packaging Designer) can help you out with this.

Everything from your email signature, to your logo, to the font you use on your website needs to be considered.

A picture tells the story of a thousand words

Images can communicate with a much wider audience than words can. This is because language can limit your audience, simply because not everyone is able to comprehend language at the same level. This could be because part of your target audience speak English (or whatever language you’re communicating in) as a second language. Or they could have difficulty reading for any number of reasons.

Images, on the other hand, are a universal language. Images can help to tell your brand’s story and to convey a message much quicker than full-length blog article – if done right.

Images can help you build an emotional connection

You can write a heart-warming, inspirational story about why you decided to start your own business. But a short video, or a single image, can also do this as well. Telstra’s ads don’t just sell the Telstra network– they sell a sense of family, togetherness and resilience.

On the other hand, an intriguing image can also encourage people to find out more behind the picture and understand the story behind it.

What does it take to become a Graphic Designer?

Marketing and advertising can be highly lucrative avenues for Graphic Designers. As a Graphic Designer, you could find yourself working for an in-house team of marketers, as part of an agency, or as a freelancer. You could utilise your unique creative skills to help both large and small companies build their brand by contributing to marketing campaigns and helping them to define their image.

If you’ve always dreamed of turning your natural creative talents into a paying job, then a career as a Graphic Designer could be for you.
