Why is the Australian government investing so much money in cyber security right now?
Recently, the federal government committed $1.35 billion to enhancing Australia’s cyber security capabilities. These funds will be spread out over the next ten years. This is the biggest investment in cyber security in Australia to date.
In a recent press release, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “My Government’s record investment in our nation’s cyber security will help ensure we have the tools and capabilities we need to fight back and keep Australians safe.”
The Australian government’s billion dollar cyber security strategy has been named “CESAR”, which stands for “cyber enhanced situational awareness and response”.
Roughly one third of this budget will be used to gather a specialised team of cyber security professionals. These cyber security experts will operate within the Australian Signals Directorate. This move will create more than 500 new Australian government cyber security jobs.
The message is clear right now: the Australian government is beginning to take the cyber security skills shortage seriously. And there’s never been a better time to begin an exciting career in cyber security.
