The Australian government is committed to future job growth in cyber security

by Chloe Baird

Why is the Australian government investing so much money in cyber security right now?

Recently, the federal government committed $1.35 billion to enhancing Australia’s cyber security capabilities. These funds will be spread out over the next ten years. This is the biggest investment in cyber security in Australia to date.

In a recent press release, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “My Government’s record investment in our nation’s cyber security will help ensure we have the tools and capabilities we need to fight back and keep Australians safe.”

The Australian government’s billion dollar cyber security strategy has been named “CESAR”, which stands for “cyber enhanced situational awareness and response”.

Roughly one third of this budget will be used to gather a specialised team of cyber security professionals. These cyber security experts will operate within the Australian Signals Directorate. This move will create more than 500 new Australian government cyber security jobs.

The message is clear right now: the Australian government is beginning to take the cyber security skills shortage seriously. And there’s never been a better time to begin an exciting career in cyber security.

Is cyber security a good career choice in Australia?

There has been a strong focus on cyber security recently. This has shone a spotlight on the industry and the critical need for skilled professionals.

If you’re analytically minded, love solving problems and are passionate about IT, then a job in cyber security might be perfect for you.

Working in cyber security can be challenging, as it requires you to think on your feet, have meticulous attention to detail, and to always go that extra mile to make sure things are running as they should. But it can also be highly rewarding. And let’s not forget, this is an expanding, global industry with extremely low unemployment.

The average salary for a Cyber Security Specialist in Australia, according to the government’s Job Outlook website, is around $1932 per week for a full-time employee. This is higher than the national average.

The Australian government is encouraging more women to consider a career in cyber security.

Where should I start my career in cyber security?

ISACA recently completed a survey focusing on the global cyber security skills gap. They found that one of the biggest challenges faced by employers was a lack of qualifications and hands-on training.
