Course Description

Get qualified to assist an Occupational Therapist and help improve the health and quality of life for people who have suffered injury, illness or accident.

This course is superseded by CHC43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance.  For now, you may still enrol in this course, and we will transition you to the new course at no additional cost once it is available. Requirements

Education

You will need to have completed year 10, or equivalent. Equivalency can be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • A qualification at Certificate II level or higher OR
  • 2 years of industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication.

Minimum age

You will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian or require guardian/parental consent.

English

This course involves reading and undertaking a range of written assessments, as well as engaging in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication. As such, entry to the course requires the successful completion of English to Year 10 level.

If you haven't successfully completed English at Year 10 level, you can demonstrate equivalency through one of the following:

  • Successful completion of a Nationally Recognised Training qualification at Certificate II level or higher; or
  • 2 years relevant industry experience in a role that requires the use of written documentation and communication

  • Software to view online videos and images. Software such as Adobe Reader, Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer etc. are available as a free download from the internet.

Physical requirements

  • Students need to be fit to:
    • Stand or stoop for long periods of time
    • Undertake light physical labour 
    • Manage exposure to blood, chemicals, and other bodily fluids
  • Learners undertaking the unit HLTAID011 Provide first aid, will be required to undertake Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) continuously for a minimum 2 minutes while kneeling on the floor as indicated in the assessment requirements for the unit.

Maryanne Roland

Maryanne is a registered Occupational Therapist, with over 30 years’ experience. She has worked in many settings, including hospitals, outpatient departments, schools and community programs. 

She now works as a private practitioner as well as an educator. Maryanne contributes to the undergraduate Occupational Therapy program at the University of Newcastle. She is also a Problem Based Learning Facilitator with the School of Medicine.

An experienced Trainer and Assessor, Maryanne enjoys her role as an Assessor with Open Colleges.

Work Placement

The course contains a minimum of 120 hours of work placement

The workplace will need to be involved in the delivery of professional allied health services, including occupational therapy services, to clients.

During your work placement, you will need access to a range of different clients who are receiving occupational therapy programs, including at least 3 different clients who require occupational therapy programs to assist them with their activities of daily living. 

You will also need exposure to clients who require initial and/or ongoing occupational therapy assessments and/or screening, as well as access to clients who require assistive equipment to be measured and fitted.

Immunisations

State/Territory Health departments, clinics and hospitals across Australia will require students to provide a notice of immunisation, completed by a registered GP, to verify current and active immunisation prior to the commencement of their clinical placement. It should be noted that immunisation against Hepatitis B consists of a series of three injections taken over a 5 month period and you will not be deemed to be immune until such time as serology is provided post the 5 months to indicate your current status.

Cost of work placement

All costs of work placement including any placement fees charged by the host organisation (whether to the student or OC), cost of statutory checks and vaccinations, travel, accommodation and uniforms are the responsibility of the student.

During your work placement, you will need access to a range of different clients who are receiving occupational therapy programs, including at least 3 different clients who require occupational therapy programs to assist them with their activities of daily living. 

You will also need exposure to clients who require initial and/or ongoing occupational therapy assessments and/or screening, as well as access to clients who require assistive equipment to be measured and fitted.

Immunisations

State/Territory Health departments, clinics and hospitals across Australia will require students to provide a notice of immunisation, completed by a registered GP, to verify current and active immunisation prior to the commencement of their clinical placement. It should be noted that immunisation against Hepatitis B consists of a series of three injections taken over a 5 month period and you will not be deemed to be immune until such time as serology is provided post the 5 months to indicate your current status.

Cost of work placement

All costs of work placement including any placement fees charged by the host organisation (whether to the student or OC), cost of statutory checks and vaccinations, travel, accommodation and uniforms are the responsibility of the student.
