His experience includes working with international and local volunteers and students in numerous developing countries and has developed many innovative community services projects. In addition, Rosan has worked in the Disability sector. He holds a Diploma of Community Services, Diploma of Business and Leadership, Certificate IV Training and Assessment and is completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Project Management.
Currently Rosan is a Director of ACATA Australia, a not-for profit organisation that partners with Australian colleges and universities to deliver effective community services projects focusing on social development and change.
Rychelle worked as a Residential Youth Worker with high risk young people for many years. She currently works as a Youth Education Trainer, teaching work-related and personal development skills. Rychelle enjoys being able to make a difference in young people’s lives by giving them opportunities to learn new things. Rychelle is a Trainer and Assessor at a well-known RTO for all community services courses. She enjoys giving other people an insight into what it takes, and how rewarding it is, to be a worker in the community services sector. Rychelle is currently completing her Bachelor of Social Work with an interest in child and adolescent psychology.

What is a work placement?
A work placement is the part of your course where you learn and are assessed in a place of work related to your course which has been approved by Open Colleges.
At your work placement, you'll get practical, hands on experience under the guidance of your supervisor. Your supervisor will be someone with involvement in industry, who can mentor you during your placement.
What are the benefits?

- Work placement is often the most rewarding part of a student’s course. Working face-to-face with clients and colleagues in your chosen field makes a huge difference to your career confidence.
How do I find a work placement?
You’ll need to find a work placement yourself and ensure it’s approved by Open Colleges. When looking for a suitable work placement host organisation, have a think about the following:
- Are you already working or volunteering in the industry your course is related to? You could potentially do your work placement at your current place of work or have contacts that could recommend a suitable work place. Ask around!
- If you’re entering a new industry, do some research and start thinking about organisations you could approach. We have plenty of resources available to help with approaching and finding a suitable work placement organisation.
Cost of work placement
All costs of work placement, including any placement fees charged by the host organisation (whether to the student or Open Colleges), cost of statutory checks and vaccinations, travel, accommodation, and uniforms are the responsibility of the student. These fees will vary and are dependent on your location within Australia.
- Costs for statutory checks will range between $0 - $100 dependent on the type of check you select and your state.
- Costs for vaccinations will very between practitioners, please refer to your GP for approximate costs.
- Placement fees will vary, please discuss this with your intended host organisation for approximate costs.
Work placement hours
This course contains a minimum of 160 hours of work placement.
Work placement hours can be done part time or as a block, depending on the host organisation's requirements and availability. You will not achieve any units of competency unless you have completed your work placement hours.
You will need to undertake your work placement in an organisation involved in professional community services, such as residential facilities, group homes, respite care services, and community support settings. The specific requirements of the workplace are outlined in the Workplace Assessment Guide which can be found in OpenSpaceX.
Open Colleges will need to ascertain whether the workplace you have chosen is appropriate before you commence your work placement hours.
Please note that your host organisation may require you to provide an up to immunisation history to verify current and active immunisations prior to the commencement of your work placement. Open Colleges has no control over this requirement so if you are unable to provide this, you will need to discuss this with your intended Host Organisation.
It should also be noted that some immunisations such as Hepatitis B need multiple injections to be administered over a specific time period before you are deemed immune. It is important that you consult with your GP as soon as possible to avoid delays in starting your work placement.
The workplace supervisor will need to have
- Hold a Certificate III in Community Services qualification or equivalent
- At least 1 years' industry experience.
RecommendationOpen Colleges recommends that you consider the work placement options and any associated costs in your local area prior to enrolling in this course.
There are a number of statutory checks that may be required by workplaces, such as a
- National Police Check,
- NDIS Worker Screening
- Working with Children Check (or state equivalent),
- Occupational Assessment
- Screening and vaccination against infectious disease including COVID-19, and
- Signing of Codes of Conduct and Confidentiality Agreements
- First Aid Certificate.
In addition, individual workplaces may impose additional requirements on students undertaking work placement. You will be responsible for the costs of any such checks or requirements.
Whilst it is not a requirement to hold a current First Aid Certificate to undertake work placement in the disability services industry, workplaces have the right to request this.More information can be found in the Workplace Assessment Guide.
There are no mandated education entry requirements for this qualification as per the CHC Community Services Training Package.

- Have language, literacy and numeracy skills that ensure the ability to read and comprehend technical terms and communicate effectively through email. These skills are equivalent to those that would be required to successfully complete year 12.
- Access to a modern computer with high speed internet.
