Imagine gaining an online qualification while starting up an emerging business? We spoke to Edwin, an Open Colleges student studying photography online from Malaysia.
Hoping to enhance an already busy and exciting career, Edwin is an international student studying the Certificate in Digital Photography. The course teaches students to use specialist programs currently in use in the industry and receive the latest, most modern digital materials that will cover new, necessary skills to create a compelling portfolio or for publication through social media.
Edwin lives in Penang, which is a Malaysian state located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, by the Strait of Malacca. Known as the Silicon Valley of the East for its industries, Penang is also one of the most urbanised and economically important states in the country.
A passion for photography led Edwin to pursue a formal education
“I don't do photography for a living for now but, photography is my passion and I do this as a part-time job,” he explains.
If you’re a creative person who wants to enhance the professionalism of your photographs, the Certificate in Digital Photography will allow you to gain the skills you want in the most flexible and accessible way.
“I love travelling and exploring different places, photographing the beauty and looking for the essence of a place,” he said. Equipped with a Digital SLR camera, Edwin now has a start on the path to freelance photography by learning digital imaging skills that will make his images stand out. Prior to enrolling, Edwin had already shot a few weddings, international sporting events like the International Triathlon, fencing and cycling events and commercials. He also did some landscape photography, travel photography and still life images in his leisure time.
Tackling life goals by pursuing new creative skills
“My primary aim to get qualified as a digital photographer where I can use it to strengthen my profile as a photographer in my photography business,” he says.
Currently, Edwin is teaching in an international school as a Physical Education teacher and a language teacher. At his final semester of a Master Degree in Education, Edwin is also simultaneously pursuing his qualifications as a photographer through Open Colleges.
“I am hoping to grow my photography business and on the education side, I'm hoping to pursue PhD after finishing my master's degree.”

“Open Colleges was an overall great experience where my assignments are marked so quickly and constructive comments were given to me to help to bring my photos to a higher level,” he smiles.
“I have learnt to be able to visualise and pay closer attention to my composition in particular. In addition to that, I have also learnt to think more in depth about my shots i.e what's the message that it can convey to my views or the mood it can create.”
