The amount of creative jobs available today are teeming with diversity, whether it's in design, photography, digital art or visual art. 

The creative industries have emerged as one of Australia’s strongest performing sectors, with employment growing by a steady 2.8 per cent per year from 2006 to 2011. That’s 40 per cent higher than the economy as a whole. According to the last census, jobs in advertising, marketing, architecture, design, visual arts, film, TV newspapers and radio, music, performing arts, publishing, software and digital content are booming.

This has been attributed to the digital revolution and the rising demand for digital and design services across the whole economy. The census revealed that more than 370 000 people are now employed in the creative industries, gaining 47 000 jobs in the period between 2006 and 2011, more than twice the rate of job growth in the general workforce.

There’s great news for potential photographers, digital content and software designers; these sectors experienced the strongest growth, with photography growing at a notable rate of 5.5 per cent per annum.

“Just because the word ‘industry’ or 'industries' is used, doesn’t mean we are not making art. The clichéd view of artist is no longer the case – many are now very savvy and can handle money,” says the Creative Economy Report Card, published by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Graphic design, graphic arts, consulting services, product and fashion design have all grown 3.8 per cent – which is twice the rate of the national workforce as a whole. Digital publishing grew at a remarkable cumulative annual rate of 14 per cent between ’06 and ’11. That’s seven times faster than the broader economy.

“Creative industries are about giving the audience what it wants; it is about the attraction of the new and shiny, about new media technologies,” says the Council of the Arts.

The Australian government seems to be serious about making sure this trend continues, with the Minister for the Arts saying, “I am confident that Australia‘s creative businesses and talent will respond positively to the opportunities and challenges ahead and that this strategy will stimulate interest and, ultimately, further investment in the creative industries in Australia.”
