Marketing & Communication Skills: Jade-Ceres Munoz Studies Online from New Zealand

Thinking about taking up study so you can brush-up your skills for the modern workforce? We spoke to Jade-Ceres Munoz, an Open Colleges student studying online from New Zealand.

After relocating to New Zealand from the Philippines, Jade decided to enhance her skills with a Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication. “I've always been into digital marketing,” she says. “But, it’s been more than fifteen years since I last studied.”

Jade has acquired a diligent resume throughout her career and has been quick to anticipate change in today's fast-moving business environment. With over ten years of experience working in SEO abroad in the U.S and the Philippines, her commitment to ongoing personal development and training is important for staying relevant in a technologically driven industry.

“When I moved to Auckland last year, I was offered a position at an agency as a Senior Digital Marketing Consultant and I wanted to make sure that my skills suited the regional market,” she admits. “I knew that taking a Digital Marketing course with Open Colleges would be the perfect fit."

Finding a balance between work, life and study

Jade has a knack for handling a large list of priorities, which on top of full-time work includes a tight regime for managing community projects, updating her own travel blog Baby Jet, Set, Go! at the same time as raising a young family. It might all sound a bit overwhelming, but for Jade, the stress is eased by studying part-time online.

“I have a four-year-old daughter, so studying online was my best option to balance work and family life,” she explains. “The assessments are challenging although, it's been fun re-learning and it’s getting easier as the course progresses.”

Gaining new skills in Marketing & Communications while studying online

Study has been beneficial for innovating Jade’s current projects. “I'm using what I learn in my current role as a digital marketer, and I love that Open Colleges combines both methods of traditional and digital marketing in its lessons.”

With a new approach to public relations, Jade was able to apply new knowledge to her community initiative. “I recently started a campaign in New Zealand called Books on the Bus, which aims to put new and used books in the public transport system, and while I had my digital and social media know-how, it was what I learned about the more traditional aspects of marketing that really helped me kick-start the campaign.”

Rallying support from publishers, booksellers and charity organisations, Books on the Bus caught the attention of the press and the story was circulated nationally in the first three weeks of going live. “It's been an exciting run so far!”

For Jade, the best part of the day is discovering new material that she can put into practice and she is already looking towards the future. “I want to start my own full-service digital marketing agency where we’ll be able to offer social media marketing, SEO, content planning as well as website design and development.”
