Svetlana Burckhardt

"When I first migrated to Australia fifteen years ago I applied to 43 places seeking a job but I didn't get a single interview. And look how far I’ve come now!"

Svetlana is a qualified beauty therapist, make-up artist, personal stylist and celebrity eyebrow consultant in Sydney.

She is the director of Eyebrow Experts in Sydney and author of the recently released book Confessions of a Brazilian Waxing Queen. Svetlana is a guru of both brows and waxing (famously known for her incredible 7 minute Brazilian!) and is very well recognised in the field of beauty. She has appeared in publications including Grazia, Madison, Harper's Bazaar, OK!, Country Style and Mx and her clients include personalities such as Sam Brett, Annalise Braakensiek, as well as some of the beauty and fashion editors of top Australian magazines.

1 In a couple of short sentences, tell us about your career path and how it has evolved over time.

Since I was a little girl I was always curious about my mother’s make-up bag. I used to ruin her lipsticks, eye shadows, eyeliners and perfume used be my favorite. I love brows and hate body hair. I used to undress and check dolls bodies and how it all works when the dolls were naked. Perhaps I was just checking for any hair.

2 What advice would you offer students looking to get into waxing?

If you like a slow paced environment then waxing is not for you. With waxing you need to love people, accept everyone for who they are, be open minded and not judgmental. It’s also important to move fast, think quick, be a people person, but not overly sensitive.

3 What are the biggest challenges you face in your daily work and how do you overcome them?

I take each day as it comes. I try to stay positive, love people and accept everyone for who they are and what makes them unique. Working with women is great however it can also be very challenging. I learn a lot from clients. You can read all about it in my book called "Confessions of a Brazilian Waxing Queen" (it's a fun read!).

4 What is your secret to a great Brazilian wax?

I listen to every client very carefully. I have also done my own Brazilian millions of times and that's how I developed my own 7 minute Brazilian technique.

5 What are the latest trends in waxing?

I've had more and more people asking for a natural bikini shape on top, but I'm finding women are still themselves completely bare. My signature procedure is the "completely bare", removing all hair from the top of the bikini line, down. I love this one and it's my favorite!

6 What's the one thing your clients love the most about your beauty therapy services?

I also love brows. I do lots and lots of brows. I firstly see brows and then the person I talk to. I'm also a cosmetic tattooist and do lashes, smoky eyes and full lips. I love working with new products, teaching and inventing new things.

7 Anything else you would like to add?

I would love to motivate and inspire students with my personal success story. When I first migrated to Australia fifteen years ago I applied to 43 places seeking a job but I didn't get a single interview. And look how far I’ve come now!
