Is personality important when it comes to choosing a potential career path? Believe it or not, there are certain jobs that are more suited to a particular personality type than others. For example, if you’re a people-person, you like helping others and have a kind, empathetic nature, a career in Nursing or Allied Health could be a good fit for you.
If you’re at a crossroads in life and unsure what your next career move will be, here are a few things you can do to figure out what jobs will best suit your unique personality:
Figure out your likes and dislikes
This is important as it will set the tone for how engaged you are in your job and how passionate you are about the work you’re doing.
Have a think about what inspires you. Are there any hobbies/activities you like to do on the weekend? Are you creative? Do you like drawing, designing or writing? Are numbers your thing? Do you like solving problems and puzzles? Is helping others your thing? Do you like being active?
When you narrow down your passion to a very specific thing (or at least rule out the things that you don’t like to do!) it that will give you a better idea of what your next career move might look like.
Think about your key strengths and weaknesses
Now that you’ve figured out the things you like doing – jot down what your key strengths are, so you can match them up. It’s great to have passion, but having a degree of skill for your passion will contribute to your success in your chosen career.
For example, if you are an excellent communicator, passionate about helping others and good at problem solving, a career in counselling might be a good fit for you. Or perhaps you’re someone who is analytical and organised, with a high level of attention to detail; likes working with their hands and being outdoors, a career in building and construction would provide the perfect opportunity to combine your skills with your passion.
Ask yourself what your goals and aspirations are
The next step is to figure out how you will channel your passions into a meaningful career. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time? Have you thought about it?
Often, we get stuck in life because we don’t actually know where we are going. We struggle to find purpose and just drift aimlessly.
Write down what your ultimate goal is – what will make you the happiest doing? What steps are you going to take to get there? When you have a bit of direction, you will feel more in control and confident about where you want to go in your career (and in life!)
