If you’ve been out of education for a while, the prospect of studying a course online probably seems pretty daunting. That’s why we’ve decided to talk you through the whole process of studying with Open Colleges. You might find that it’s not as complicated as you first thought.
Why study with Open Colleges?
With Open Colleges, there are no set deadlines or schedules so you can study at your own pace, around your commitments – great if you have a busy family life or are working full-time.
We aim to provide affordable education to anyone who wants to study so our courses can be paid in full or through weekly, fortnightly or monthly payment plans that can fit around your regular outgoings.
It’s a common misconception that if you study online, you’ll be left to your own devices. With Open Colleges, you’ll be supported every step of the way. Reach our Student Support Officers, Trainers and Assessors and other students online or over the phone, whenever you need them.
Enough about the benefits, let’s have a look at how you actually study online with Open Colleges. Let’s start from the beginning…
Find a course that fits
Once you download a course guide from the Open Colleges website, you’ll be contacted by one of our friendly Enrolment Consultants – or you can give them a call yourself.
Even if you’re not sure what you want to study, our Enrolment Consultants are experts in their course areas and can give you the guidance you need to make sure you find the ideal course for you. They’ll get to know your situation, your previous qualifications and what you hope to get from studying online and will explain all the options that are available, before recommending the course they think would be the best fit.
Go for it
Open Colleges has educated over 800,000 students and currently has around 60,000 active students so once you take the plunge and sign up, you’ll be in good company.
You can sign up in one of two ways: by filling in the form on your chosen course page on the website, or over the phone with your Enrolment Consultant. Either way, it will only take a few minutes, so you’ll have plenty of time to celebrate before settling down to study!
Your online campus
When you enrol, you’ll receive a welcome email and your login details for OpenSpace, our online learning platform.
Think of OpenSpace as your easy-to-use online campus, it has everything you need but is way more convenient. As you’ll be studying online, you won’t have to be anywhere at a specific time and you’ll never need to worry about campus opening hours – OpenSpace is available 24/7!
Make OpenSpace your first port of call whenever you settle down to study. It’s where you’ll find your learning materials and course content and can immerse yourself in research by accessing the extensive online libraries. It’s also where you’ll submit your assessments, receive any feedback and check your grades.
Here to help
Just because you’re studying online doesn’t mean you’re completely on your own. Far from it! There’s a whole community of online students, Student Support Staff and Trainers and Assessors who are available online and over the phone to answer questions.
Our Student Support Officers can help you with everything from making sure you have all your learning materials to helping you find your way around OpenSpace and giving you some guidance on creating a manageable study plan. Your course Trainer and Assessors will answer any questions you have about the course content or assessments and you can always check in with other students and share your experience in the student forum.
Studying a practical subject online may seem like an odd concept but with Open Colleges you’ll have plenty of chances to get the hands-on experience that will give you an edge. For subjects that require some face-to-face learning, like Vet Nursing or Allied Health, you’ll complete Structured Workplace Learning (also known as a work placement).
You’ll gain valuable on-the-job experience that will boost your professional knowledge and confidence in the workplace. It’ll also look great on the resume when you start looking for employment in your chosen field.
While it’s your responsibility to find an organisation to do your work placement with, there is always support available. If you’re struggling to find a placement that suits, our Work Placement Support Officers can help you weigh up your options and get the experience that will benefit you the most.
