Course: Certificate in Freelance Sports Writing & Photography

This specialist Open Colleges (formerly Cengage Education) course provides fundamental training for aspiring sports journalists. You will be trained in generating angles and ideas for sports stories and photography; writing saleable articles and reviews; and conducting interviews and photo shoots. Business and promotional aspects of freelance photography are also covered including researching the market, the opportunities offered by stock agencies and the greeting card/postcard market, and working as a stringer for international publications.

Modules include case studies and exercises relating to various sporting contexts, including cricket, rugby league, golf, motorcycle racing, boxing, fishing and sailing.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

Open entry. Previous schooling and academic achievements are not required for entry into this course.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a student support officer to discuss alternative methods of communication.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent, and
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or
  • Mac OS X, and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:

Tony Bosworth

Tony Bosworth

Tony Bosworth is a newspaper and magazine journalist who has also spent time working in radio. He has had his work published in UK newspapers including The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, Daily Star and The Observer, as well as a raft of specialist magazines. At the age of 21 he launched Which Car? magazine for Haymarket Publishing in London.

Tony moved to Australia 13 years ago and has launched or relaunched numerous magazines in that time, including Business Asia, The Chief, Australian Telecom, Australian Classic Car, Electrical World, Connoisseurs Gallery and Voice&Data.

He was also a freelance writer for The Bulletin, contributing articles on subjects as diverse as robotics, GM foods, immortaility and flu pandemics. He has also had five non-fiction books published.

Tony also has a history in teaching, having taught numerous media and journalism courses back in the UK. Now, as well as being a tutor for the Australian College of Journalism, Tony also teaches Media Training to senior management in major corporations, as well as writing for a range of Australian and international publications.
