  • Communicate effectively in health

    Students gain the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a health setting with clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements. Topics include:

    • Ethical work practices
    • Promoting a positive approach to health
    • Personal and professional work standards
    • Personal and professional development.
  • Deal sensitively with cultural issues

    In this module the worker will learn to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other culturally diverse clients and colleagues. Topics include:

    • Awareness of historical and cultural difference
    • Cultural safety and realities
    • Partnering with cultural diversity.
  • Manage challenging behaviour incidents

    Develops student knowledge and skills when responding to the needs of people with challenging behaviours. Issues analysed include:

    • Type, frequency and triggers for challenging behaviour
    • Strategies for preventing and managing challenging behaviours
    • Role of stakeholders in developing and implementing strategies/plans for managing challenging behaviours.
  • Implement infection control and OHS strategies

    In this skill set the worker will be able to identify occupational health and safety hazards, and assess risk, as well as follow instructions and procedures. They will undertake study of infection control theory and practice.

  • Practise basic First Aid

    Students will learn to provide First Aid response, life support, manage the casualty, the incident and other First Aiders, until the arrival of medical help.

  • Employ clinical skills in medical practice

    This skill set is comprised of the units 'Confirm physical health status' and 'Use advanced medical terminology'. It provides the student with the knowledge of anatomy and body function and related terminology that underpins their practice and communication with other health professionals. Students will be assessed in 'Practise Basic First Aid' prior to undertaking this module.

  • Sterilising in a medical practice environment

    Students develop the skills and knowledge required to follow the correct procedures for handling reusable medical equipment including, collection of soiled items, identification, inspection, cleaning operation, and the monitoring and maintenance of associated cleaning equipment.

  • Coordinate the effective functioning of medical office

    In this module students will develop the skills and knowledge required to:

    • Coordinate effective functioning of a medical practice
    • Implement and monitor compliance with legal and ethical requirements
    • Administer the information management system
    • Provide reception services
    • Prepare and process medical accounts
    • Maintain patient records
    • Maintain medication stocks.
  • Work with aged clients (elective)

    This module reflects the knowledge and skills required to work within a legal and ethical framework that supports duty of care requirements, uncluding interests, rights and needs of aged clients.

  • Work with clients with mental health problems (elective)

    This unit describes the knowledge and skills required in the context and across the range of settings where mental health work occurs, to work as part of a team to develop and maintain effective and trustful communication and relationships with people affected by mental health condition, their family, carer/s and friends that contribute to recovery and independence.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 18 years.

Workplace requirements

Students are required to be employed in their chosen field to enhance their 'on the job' learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 21 hours per week to meet the qualification requirements.

Computer requirements

Students have the option to access their course material online.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or Mac OS X
  • CD-ROM drive

Students will also need access to a printer and the following plug-ins:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player

English language requirements

Student must meet the requirements of the national units of competency. Typically:

  • Apply reading and writing skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation/service:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues.
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess a literacy level that will enable them to interpret international safety signs, read client service delivery plans, make notations in client records and complete workplace forms and records.
  • Apply oral communication skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess oral communication skills that will enable them to ask questions, clarify understanding, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues, provide information and express encouragement.

Additional requirements

Student will need to hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate from an accredited course to cover HLTFA301B Apply First Aid. Approximate cost to student: $170.
