This nationally recognised qualification will consolidate your skills as a dental assistant, and can help you extend your career options by studying a specialist elective.

As well as expanding your knowledge of infection control and safe working practices, you will learn to safely produce radiographic images and to properly provide supportive assistance during general anaesthetic and conscious sedation procedures. Communication skills include working effectively with culturally diverse clients and colleagues, and preparation and presentation of educational information for community oral health programs. Skills relating to practice management are also covered.

    Topics include:

    • Understanding and following the organisation's infection control policies
    • Knowledge of how infection is spread
    • Relevant legislative requirements
    • Safe waste handling and management procedures
    • Hygiene, PPE and safe environmental practices.
  • Communication

    This unit covers the skills required to exercise effective communication skills with clients and colleagues while supporting the delivery of client care services. Topics include:

    • Techniques of communication
    • Ensuring understanding
    • Following instruction and procedure
    • Communicating a positive image.
  • OHS requirements

    In this module the worker will be able to identify occupational health and safety hazards, and assess risk, as well as follow instructions and procedures. Issues covered include:

    • Implementing and monitoring procedures for hazard identification and risk assessment
    • Employee and employer OHS responsibilities
    • Coaching and acting as a resource for co-workers
    • Promoting consultation and participation.
  • Dental radiography (elective)

    The principles of radiation safety during the exposure of radiographic images is the focus of this skill set, in addition to developing best practice skills in preparing and producing a radiographic image. Students also improve their capacity to work in a culturally diverse setting.

  • Oral health promotion (elective)

    Designed for dental assistants who are involved in community oral health programs, this skill set will engage students with the individual learning process, facilitate education and encourage cultural diversity while promoting good health and hygiene. Students also develop their programming and presentation skills.

  • Dental practice administration work (elective)

    For the assistant who is also a first point of contact and involved in some level of practice management, this skill set includes working with cultural diversity, systems and financial records.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 18 years.

Workplace requirements

Students are required to be employed in their chosen field to enhance their 'on the job' learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 21 hours per week to meet the qualification requirements.

Computer requirements

Students have the option to access their course material online.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or Mac OS X
  • CD-ROM drive

Students will also need access to a printer and the following plug-ins:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player

English language requirements

Student must meet the requirements of the national units of competency. Typically:

  • Apply reading and writing skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation/service:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues.
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess a literacy level that will enable them to interpret international safety signs, read client service delivery plans, make notations in client records and complete workplace forms and records.
  • Apply oral communication skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess oral communication skills that will enable them to ask questions, clarify understanding, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues, provide information and express encouragement.

Pre-entry requirements

Ability to demonstrate all compulsory units from the Certificate III in Dental Assisting (as listed below) is a pre-requisite for entry to this qualification.

These units will be packaged as part of the qualification if the student does not already hold a Certificate III in Dental Assisting. Students will be required to complete a Pre-entry Requirements Application as part of their qualification.

Student may choose to go on to study a management qualification.

Joanna An

Now entering her eighth year of working in the dental industry, Joanna has worked in multiple dental practices ranging from the Sydney CBD to regional and rural NSW. She has a sound understanding that each and every practice is unique.

Joanna started working as a dental assistant and then studied for her Bachelor of Oral Health in order to work as a dental hygienist. Hygienists work as auxiliaries with dentists and specialists, and their main focus is on preventative dentistry procedures. Currently, she is working in both general and specialist orthodontics practices and is undertaking a Masters in Health Promotion.

She hopes to share her skills and knowledge with her students in the Dental Assisting Certificates III and IV programs and enjoys the insight her students provide to better herself in the dental profession.
