Course: Certificate IV in Cast Technology HLT41407

This course is designed for experienced cast technicians who wish to strengthen their credentials with a nationally recognised qualification.

Recognised by the Australian Orthopaedic Technicians Association, the qualification will broaden your knowledge of your role within the health care industry, especially your duty of care and legal and ethical responsibilities. You will learn about safe working practices and basic cast technology, and then move on to advanced applications and techniques. Communicating effectively with various patient types and presentations is an important component of the course.

    • Identify and manage stress.
  • Basic cast technology

    Topics include:

    • Application and removal of the most common casts (e.g: slabs, colles, smith, scaphoid, bennetts, short arm, metacarpal, short leg, long leg, u-slab)
    • Modification of casts
    • Material selection
    • Risk-minimisation associated with cast/device application and removal.
  • Advanced cast technology

    Topics include:

    • Applying, modifying and removing orthopaedic devices
    • Application and removal of soft goods bracing and splinting (eg: knee immobiliser, shoulder immobiliser, soft collars, slings, collar and cuff)
    • Application and removal of devices (eg: HSS, hinged, clavicle strap)
    • Joint conditions: presentation and management
    • Understanding the role and place of traction
    • Application and removal of casts not covered in basic workshop (eg: halo jacket, PTB, hip spica)
    • Reviewing X-rays in relation to fracture management.
  • Musculoskeletal anatomy and applied physiology

    Topics include:

    • Medical terminology
    • Body systems
    • Musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology of upper limb, lower limb and trunk
    • Joint conditions – presentation and management
    • Orthopaedic conditions – presentation and management
    • Bone injuries – types, presentation and management
    • Soft tissue and bone healing
    • Common and not-so-common fractures; their presentation, causes, complications and management.

Entry requirements

As this qualification is offered by RPL pathway only, all students are required to have at least 1000 hours of relevant industry experience to be eligible to enrol.

Minimum education

  • School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 18 years.

Workplace requirements

Students are required to be employed in their chosen field to enhance their 'on the job' learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 21 hours per week to meet the qualification requirements.

Computer requirements

Students have the option to access their course material online.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or Mac OS X
  • CD-ROM drive

Students will also need access to a printer and the following plug-ins:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player

English language requirements

Student must meet the requirements of the national units of competency. Typically:

  • Apply reading and writing skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation/service:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues.
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess a literacy level that will enable them to interpret international safety signs, read client service delivery plans, make notations in client records and complete workplace forms and records.
  • Apply oral communication skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess oral communication skills that will enable them to ask questions, clarify understanding, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues, provide information and express encouragement.

Additional requirements

The professional role of Cast Technologist is not recognised in NSW. Students applying within NSW will be directed towards the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assisting instead.

Only students from outside of NSW will be considered for enrolment.

Student may choose to go on to study either a management qualification or an additional qualification in health care.
