Podiatry assistants are usually staff members in a facility, service or practice who are employed to assist a qualified podiatrist. They undertake a range of patient care tasks relating to feet, legs and toes, including foot hygiene procedures and assisting with orthotic and footwear modifications. Qualified assistants are particularly valued as their services free up podiatrists to treat more patients.

Entry requirements

Students will require a reasonable level of physical fitness as the role involves a significant level of manual handling.

 

Minimum education

  • Year 10 or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a student support officer to discuss alternative methods of communication.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent, and
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or
  • Mac OS X, and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player.

English language requirements

You should be able to read and write English at approximately Year 11 schooling level. If English is your second language and you did not complete Year 11 schooling in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:

Open Colleges will endeavour to provide additional assistance to students who experience difficulties with language, literacy and numeracy.

Workplace requirements

Students will be required to undertake 160 hours in an appropriate environment and to demonstrate their skills in the workplace according to the units of competency they are studying. Suitable settings may include hospitals, private practice, aged care facilities, rehabilitation centres, community health facilities, NGO health centres, sports medicine facilities, primary health practices and wellness centres. The work placement must be supervised by a qualified podiatrist or podiatry assistant.

Additional requirements

National Criminal Record Check: Prior to commencing work placement, students will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate.

Commission for Children and Young People Student Declaration: Before commencing work placement, students will be required to sign a CCYP Student Declaration form, which they must provide to the state Public Health Facility. This form declares that the student is not prohibited from working with children and young people.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Infectious Disease: Health departments across Australia require students to be screened and immunised prior to the commencement of their clinical placement. Due to the nature of the work, it may be wise for students to be immunised against hepatitis prior to the commencement of their placement. Students should discuss this with a prospective host employer.

First Aid Certificate: Some workplaces will require students to hold a current First Aid Certificate before commencing work placement.

Students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Podiatry) HLT42507 may go on to further studies in podiatry, allied health, nursing or other health-related fields.

Work Placement

Why is a Work Placement Required?

This course includes 160 hours of work placement. Work placement is required to ensure that the student is able to demonstrate and apply what he or she has learnt in an industry context.

Workplace assessments and training must be undertaken in workplace organisations that are suitable for the course. The student must be under the direction of an appropriately qualified and experienced supervisor. The workplace assessments will be conducted by Open Colleges workplace assessors, who will contact both the workplace organisation and the student to arrange mutually convenient times to conduct the workplace assessments.

Open Colleges will assist students to identify work placement opportunities in an appropriate organisation however, it is the responsibility of the student to find and complete the work placement. In the event that the student has previously arranged a work placement Open Colleges will check the suitability of this arrangement.

Open Colleges will make reasonable efforts to organise for assessment to be conducted in the workplace however, the student may be required to attend assessment events at other locations. If the student does not complete a mandatory work placement within the duration of the course Open Colleges is not permitted to issue the qualification.

You will need to complete this part of your studies in an Australian workplace.

Insurance

Open Colleges provides insurance cover for the mandatory work placement you undertake as part of your course. This insurance coverage includes Public and Products Liability Insurance as well as Student Personal Accident Insurance.

Open Colleges maintains Public and Products Liability Insurance which covers students undertaking work placements in the employers’ workplace.

Known as Student Personal Accident Insurance, the policy covers ‘Personal Accidents’ in the workplace, and will help put employers’ minds at ease for the duration of the work placement.
