Entry requirements

Minimum education

We are delighted to offer this course with the entry requirements included in the first part of the program. Students who have completed the Certificate III in Nutrition & Dietetic Assistance HLT31507 or Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance HLT32407 may be eligible for credit transfer or RPL.

    Minimum age

    Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

    Computer requirements

    Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a student support officer to discuss alternative methods of communication.

    Minimum specifications for the computer are:

    • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent, and
    • Microsoft Windows 98, or
    • Mac OS X, and
    • CD-ROM drive.

    Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

    • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
    • Macromedia Flash player.

    English language requirements

    You should be able to read and write English at approximately Year 11 schooling level. If English is your second language and you did not complete Year 11 schooling in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:

    Open Colleges will endeavour to provide additional assistance to students who experience difficulties with language, literacy and numeracy.

    Workplace requirements

    Students will be required to undertake 200 hours of work placement. Students will be required to demonstrate their skills according to the units of competency they are studying.

    Additional requirements

    National Criminal Record Check: Prior to commencing work placement, students will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate.

    Health Student Undertaking: The NSW Health Student Undertaking requires students to notify the NSW Department of Health Screening Unit if students are charged or convicted of a criminal offence after the date of issue of their National Police Certificate or during the completion of their course.

    Commission for Children and Young People Student Declaration: Before commencing work placement, students will be required to sign a CCYP Student Declaration form, which they must provide to the state Public Health Facility. This form declares that the student is not prohibited from working with children and young people.

    Health Code of Conduct: Students are required to read the relevant state Code of Conduct and sign a form stating they have read and understood it.

    Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Infectious Disease: Health departments across Australia require students to be screened and immunised prior to the commencement of their clinical placement. Due to the nature of the work, it may be wise for students to be immunised against hepatitis prior to the commencement of their placement. Students should discuss this with a prospective host employer.

    Manual Handling Certificate: South Australian and Tasmanian students may need to complete a Manual Handling Certificate before commencing work placement. Please check with your work placement facility if this is a requirement.

    First Aid Certificate: Some workplaces will require students to hold a current First Aid Certificate before commencing work placement.

    Students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Nutrition & Dietetics) HLT42507 may go on to further studies in nutrition, allied health or nursing.

    Luke Barrett

    Luke Barrett

    Currently the coordinator of Open College's allied health courses, Luke Barrett has accumulated ideal experience for the role, having practised as a registered nurse, nurse educator, allied health trainer and coach, and health manager over the past 28 years.

    Luke has both undergraduate and post-graduate training in these areas, as well as in teaching and training, eHealth and informatics, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and podiatry/foot care for registered nurses. He is currently completing a Master of Nursing.

    His work has encompassed roles in accident and emergency, ICU and CCU, surgical, maternity, child and family, rehabilitation, medical, aged care, developmental disabilities, health promotion, health coaching, drug and alcohol, mental health, psychology and counselling settings. He also has sports medicine training and has worked as a sports trainer, coach, occupational first aider and first aid course trainer over many years.

    Most of all, Luke enjoys his supportive role in education and training, and encourages students to ask questions in order to derive the most benefit from their courses.

    Leah Marmulla

    Leah is qualified in health science – nutrition and dietetics, and professional member of Dietitians Association of Australian, owner of a busy nutrition clinic and nutrition promotion. She also tutors in nutrition, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmocognosy, is a student clinic supervisor and an assessment panel member for Herbal Medicine. Leah is also the author of "Ditch the Weight Gain Your Life".

    Leah is fascinated by how the body works, and is keen to help people be the best they can be. She is a big believer in the mind – body relationships that both influence the other and are inseparable. Nutrition is a cornerstone to health, but goes way beyond this.
