This nationally recognised qualification is suited to health care workers employed in sterilising departments or services who are either new to the role or wish to enhance their career prospects.

The course covers safe waste handling and management, the correct procedures for handling reusable medical equipment, and how to safely undertake disinfection processes, including thermal and chemical disinfection. You will also learn to correctly load and operate sterilisation equipment, prepare and pack sterilised items, and proper handling, storage and maintenance of sterile stock.

    This unit covers the knowledge and skills to provide a range of cleaning, delivery/collection and sterilisation support services, including those in a sterile field. Topics include:

    • Fill and deliver an express order
    • Identify customer needs for express
    • Collect contaminated items for processing
    • Knowledge of Australian Standards related to sterilisation services
    • Identify and move to maintain a sterile field.
  • Reusable medical equipment

    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to follow the correct procedures for handling reusable medical equipment, including: collection of soiled items; identification, inspection, cleaning operation, and the monitoring and maintenance of associated cleaning equipment; and correctly and safely apply and monitor disinfection processes, including thermal and chemical disinfection.

  • Care for surgical instruments

    Topics include:

    • Identify cleaning requirements of a range of surgical instruments
    • Prepare for cleaning of a range of surgical instruments
    • Apply cleaning processes to a range of surgical instruments
    • Check quality of cleaning of surgical instruments.
  • Inspect and pack items

    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to follow correct procedures to choose and operate sterilisation equipment, interpret steriliser function and parameters in the provision of sterilised medical equipment, appropriately load items for sterilisation and release of sterilised items for distribution.

    Topics include:

    • Prepare packing area
    • Prepare and inspect items
    • Assemble and package items
    • Operate equipment.
  • Sterilise loads

    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to follow correct procedures to choose and operate sterilisation equipment, interpret steriliser function and parameters in the provision of sterilised medical equipment, appropriately load items for sterilisation and release of sterilised items for distribution. Topics include:

    • Prepare sterilisation equipment
    • Load steriliser
    • Operate steriliser
    • Unload and release sterilised loads
    • Follow OHS procedures
    • Comply with quality management requirements.
  • Manage sterile stock

    This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to apply procedures for handling, storage and maintenance of sterile stock. Topics include:

    • Store sterile stock
    • Maintain packaging integrity
    • Maintain stock levels
    • Transport sterile stock
    • Complete quality management requirements.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 18 years.

Workplace requirements

Students are required to be employed in their chosen field to enhance their 'on the job' learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 16 hours per week to meet the qualification requirements.

Computer requirements

Students have the option to access their course material online.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

Students will also need access to a printer and the following plug-ins:

English language requirements

Student must meet the requirements of the national units of competency. Typically:

  • Apply reading and writing skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation/service:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues.
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess a literacy level that will enable them to interpret international safety signs, read client service delivery plans, make notations in client records and complete workplace forms and records.
  • Apply oral communication skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess oral communication skills that will enable them to ask questions, clarify understanding, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues, provide information and express encouragement.
