    Students learn about working effectively in a health setting with clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements. Topics include:

    • Ethical responsibilities
    • Positive approaches to the health industry
    • Cultural awareness
    • Continuous improvement.
  • Working safely in health

    In this module the worker will be able to identify occupational health and safety hazards, and assess risk, as well as follow instructions and procedures. Issues covered include:

    • Implementing and monitoring procedures for hazard identification and risk assessment
    • Employee and employer OHS responsibilities
    • Coaching and acting as a resource for co-workers
    • Promoting consultation and participation
    • Infection control.
  • Understanding body systems and functions

    This module describes the basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to recognise body systems and their components and to identify and refer alterations associated with the functioning of the human body in the context of health care work. It covers basic medical terminology.

  • Assisting with client movement

    This module describes the skills and knowledge required to support clients who require assistance with basic physical movement which may be due to incapacity, as well how to effectively transport and care for your clients.

  • Assistant in nursing in acute care (elective)

    Topics include:

    • Assist nursing team in an acute care environment
    • Provide support in an acute care environment
    • Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
    • Working with culturally diverse clients and co-workers.
  • Operating theatre technician (elective)

    Topics include:

    • Provision of equipment support to meet the needs of the client and surgical team in an operating suite
    • Preparation and maintenance of the operating suite environment in readiness for a theatre case
    • Provide assistance in the preparation and care of the client in the operating department prior to operative and anaesthetic procedures
    • Provide basic maintenance support, equipment set-up and other routine duties in relation to operating theatre equipment.
  • Ward support (elective)

    Topics include:

    • Prepare and maintain beds
    • Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
    • Organise personal work priorities and development
    • Handle equipment, goods, mail and furniture.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 18 years.

Workplace requirements

Students are required to be employed in their chosen field to enhance their 'on the job' learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 16 hours per week to meet the qualification requirements.

Computer requirements

Students have the option to access their course material online.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or Mac OS X
  • CD-ROM drive

Students will also need access to a printer and the following plug-ins:

English language requirements

Student must meet the requirements of the national units of competency. Typically:

  • Apply reading and writing skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation/service:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues.
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess a literacy level that will enable them to interpret international safety signs, read client service delivery plans, make notations in client records and complete workplace forms and records.
  • Apply oral communication skills required to fulfil work role in a safe manner and as specified by the organisation:
    • This requires a level of skill that enables the worker to follow work-related instructions and directions and the ability to seek clarification and comments from supervisors, clients and colleagues
    • Industry work roles will require workers to possess oral communication skills that will enable them to ask questions, clarify understanding, recognise and interpret non-verbal cues, provide information and express encouragement.

Additional requirements

Sudents who choose the elective Assistant in Nursing in Acute Care will need to hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate. Approximate cost to student: $170.

Student may choose to go on to complete either a Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support, Certificate IV in Anaesthetic Technology, Diploma of Paramedical Science (Anaesthesia) or a business qualification such as Certificate IV in Frontline Management.
