Course: Pet Groomer Certificate

Designed to build fundamental skills for students interested in working in professional pet grooming, this Open Colleges (formerly Cengage Education) course also provides excellent guidance for pet owners.

You will gain insights into the canine and feline species, their breeds, personalities, anatomies and health issues. You will be guided through the dog grooming process, with an introduction to grooming tools, bathing, drying and cutting, plus guidelines for specific breeds. The course provides advice on handling dogs, including those with behavioural problems, and includes techniques for controlling and grooming cats and kittens. Matters relating to opening a pet grooming business are also addressed.

  • Introduction to dogs and cats
    • This module covers how a grooming business is run, what happens behind the scenes and different ways of establishing a grooming business. You will explore the canine family and discuss different types of dog breeds and their personalities. Cats are also discussed at length, followed by anatomy and health issues of both dogs and cats.
  • Dog grooming
    • This module will get you started on the grooming basics by introducing you to the broad range of equipment and tools used to groom pets. You will be able to fully prepare a dog for grooming, including covering the process of bathing and drying. Finally, you will cover the basic cutting procedures.

  • Dog groups and breeds: 1
    • This module covers the grooming standards for a variety of groups. First you will explore the history of each group followed by the differences in the grooming procedures for each breed.
  • Dog groups and breeds: 2
    • This module discusses the basic personalities of dogs and how to recognise them to help you in their handling. We will show you how to protect yourself and others when dealing with dogs that have behavioural problems. You'll cover more detail about cats and their personalities, including petting and controlling cats. Finally, you'll learn the specifics of grooming cats and kittens.
  • Cat grooming
    • In this module you will explore the areas necessary to start your own business including pricing etc. You will review all the procedures, techniques and clips. This module will become your mini-reference guide.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

Open entry. Previous schooling and academic achievements are not required for entry into this course.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a student support officer to discuss alternative methods of communication.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent, and
  • Microsoft Windows 98, or
  • Mac OS X, and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:
