Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology (Mac) LMT50307 (in partnership with the College of Fashion Design)

Designed to provide the skills and knowledge required for independent work in the fashion design and garment construction industries, this nationally recognised qualification is the only one of its kind delivered entirely via distance education. Part of the LMT07 Textiles, Clothing & Footwear Training Package, it is suited both as an entry-level qualification in fashion design (as it includes all units from the Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design & Technology LMT41007) and as a useful source of skills for those seeking employment in advanced patternmaking, or who wish to produce well-fitting clothes for themselves or turn a hobby into a small business.

Among other skills, students will learn to produce a fashion illustration, apply advanced patternmaking principles and develop patterns for complex fashion garments. Training in important business skills such as cost estimating and marketing planning is also provided. The course includes CD-ROMs and workbooks from Telestia, a global leader in learning materials for the fashion industry.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • Higher School Certificate or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualifications (at Certificate III or above) OR
  • relevant vocational experience.
  • Basic sewing skills would be an advantage.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

The software provided with this course is designed to run on a Mac only. Students will receive a hard copy of the learning materials by mail, and will need access to a computer and the internet in order to use the OpenSpace online learning platform.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent and
  • Mac OS X and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player and
  • Java software and
  • Picture manager software for use in conjunction with digital camera.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course.
