Course: Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design & Technology (PC) LMT41007 (in partnership with the College of Fashion Design)

This course has been custom-designed for students seeking to break into the fashion industry, as well as dressmaking enthusiasts wishing to take their skills to the next level. It also has much to offer those wishing to produce well-fitting clothes for themselves or turn a hobby into a small business.

Developed by the innovative College of Fashion Design under the LMT07 Textiles, Clothing & Footwear Training Package, the course delivers valuable foundation skills in sketching and pattern block construction to individual measurements. You will also learn to interact and network within the fashion industry, and to communicate and sell your design concepts. On successful completion of this course, students will be able to independently create and draw original designs, draft patterns and construct garments to individual measurements. The course includes CD-ROMs and workbooks from Telestia, a global leader in learning materials for the fashion industry.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

  • Year 10 or equivalent OR
  • relevant qualification OR
  • relevant vocational experience.
  • Basic sewing skills would be an advantage.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

The software provided with this course is designed to run on a PC only. Students will receive a hard copy of the learning materials by mail, and will need access to a computer and the internet in order to use the OpenSpace online learning platform.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent and
  • Microsoft Windows 98 and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player and
  • Java software and
  • Picture manager software for use in conjunction with digital camera.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course.

Additional requirements

Students require access to:

  • a domestic sewing machine
  • digital camera (and/or scanner and camera).

Students also need to provide:

  • pattern paper
  • calico or light cotton for toiles
  • paper scissors
  • cutting scissors
  • tape measure
  • pins
  • fabric for their final four garments.
    Students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design & Technology LMT41007 will be eligible for credit towards the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology LMT50307.
