Entry requirements
Students will need to be reasonably physically fit as the role involves providing direct personal care such as showering and toileting to aged adults.
Minimum education
To gain entry into the Certificate IV in Aged Care CHC40108, a student must be deemed competent in the following core units from the Certificate III in Aged Care CHC30208:

Typically this would require the student to be currently, or recently, employed in the aged care industry.
Students can be recognised as competent in the units above through a recognised training program or recognition process.

If you have successfully completed the earlier Certificate III in Aged Care CHC30102 and have worked in aged care within the last two years, you may be able to enrol into the Certificate IV in Aged Care CHC40108 via a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Open Colleges is pleased to make available a specially developed RPL kit for this purpose.
How it works:
- Call 1300 853 033 to enrol and request an RPL kit. The kit clearly explains the process and includes all the forms you need to complete.
- Complete a self-assessment.
- Complete knowledge questions based on a gap analysis between 02 and 08 training packages.
- Complete formal assessment tasks for HLTAP301A Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context as this unit was not part of the core of the CHC30102 Package. (Please note: credit transfer is available for CHCPA301B Deliver care services using a palliative approach for students who may have completed this elective unit as part of their 02 qualification, as it is an equivalent.)
- Collect documents – CV, job description, letter from employer and competency report from supervisor.
- Complete and return the kit within two months with the $325 administration fee.
- Your application will be assessed and you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the units from the Certificate III in Aged Care CHC30208 for which you provided satisfactory evidence.
- If you receive Recognition of Prior Learning for all six prerequisite units, you will be eligible for direct entry into the Certificate IV in Aged Care CHC40108.

Minimum age of 18 years.
Computer requirements
Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a course and careers adviser to discuss alternative methods of communication.
Minimum specifications for the computer are:
- Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent and
- Microsoft Windows 2000 or Mac OS X and
- CD-ROM drive.
Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:
- Adobe Acrobat Reader and
- Macromedia Flash player.
English language requirements
If English is your second language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:

Open Colleges will endeavour to provide additional assistance to students who experience difficulties with language, literacy and numeracy.
Workplace requirements
Students are required to undertake 120 hours of work in a registered aged care facility. Students will be required to demonstrate their skills in the workplace according to the units of competency they are studying.
Additional requirements
National Criminal Record Check: Prior to commencing work placement, students will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check (CRC) to obtain a National Police Certificate.
Health Student Undertaking: The NSW Health Student Undertaking requires students to notify the NSW Department of Health Screening Unit if students are charged or convicted of a criminal offence after the date of issue of their National Police Certificate or during the completion of their course.
Commission for Children and Young People Student Declaration: Before commencing work placement, students will be required to sign a CCYP Student Declaration form, which they must provide to the state Public Health Facility. This form declares that the student is not prohibited from working with children and young people.
Health Code of Conduct: Students are required to read the relevant state Code of Conduct and sign a form stating they have read and understood it.
Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Infectious Disease: Health departments across Australia require students to be screened and immunised prior to the commencement of their clinical placement. Due to the nature of the work, it may be wise for students to be immunised against hepatitis prior to the commencement of their placement. Students should discuss this with a prospective host employer.
Manual Handling Certificate: South Australian and Tasmanian students may need to complete a Manual Handling Certificate before commencing work placement. Please check with your work placement facility if this is a requirement.
First Aid Certificate: Some workplaces will require students to hold a current First Aid Certificate before commencing work placement.
