Payscale.com lists the wage for a role in similar roles to Business Professionals (living in Sydney, managing a team of 20, with 5 years’ experience) as being between an average of $70 000 per annum and $164 910 at the highest end of the market.

9.6% of Business Practice workers are older than 55 while only limited manager roles within Event Management, HR (and otherwise) are younger than age 19.

Available data for these jobs shows that 20.1% of roles held an Advanced Diploma / Diploma. A large proportion of people in roles similar to this hold a bachelor degree and there are a small percentage of people working who have only competed Year 12.

Trends in the Business Industry

How big are Australian businesses? According to the Business Report Card from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, In 2014-15, business entry and exit rates were highest for businesses with no employees. 61% of actively trading businesses in Australia had no employees, 28% had 1-4, 9% had 5-19, 2% had 20-199, and less than 1% had 200 or more.

Among businesses operating in both June 2014 and June 2015, there was net movement away from having 1-19 employees in June 2014 towards either having no employees or having more than 19 employees in June 2015. Most businesses actively trading in Australia in June 2015 were unincorporated businesses owned and operated by the household sector.

The more employees an ongoing business had the more like it would survive.

In two sentences, tell us what a bit about your role; working in a corporate environment.

I'm the Managing Director of an award winning Gen Y Financial Advisory firm that focuses on providing a full financial service offering to young professionals, sports and entertainment professionals and entrepreneurs. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with running an organisation like this, and I thrive on that fact. I work with an amazing group of people in both Melbourne and Sydney, who are professional, intelligent, passionate about what we do, and a bit of fun too! Ultimately, my role is to grow the business by leading my team to provide exceptional service and advice to their clients.

What do you do on a day to day basis?

It's hard to find routine, however I do my best! If I'm in the office, my day consists of a morning meeting with everyone around the country, checking in with my key team members and areas of the business (this includes business development, client services, provision of financial advice, marketing and public relations, human resources, business finances) and of course... fending off the emails!

If I'm out of the office it's generally back to back meeting, checking emails and social media on the go in order to stay on top of things. As the owner of the business, I always need to be building and maintaining relationships with other business owners and people who we do business with. There are also plenty of interviews with journalists and I'm often booked to speak at events on personal and business finance and entrepreneurship.

What are the best parts of the job?

The variety, and working with people: my two favourite things. I get bored easily and love the thrill of having a full plate and problem solving my way through each week! I also absolutely love what we do as a business, and that's what really drives me - knowing that we are changing the way a generation of Australians view their money, it's very exciting.

What skills/attributes do potential workers need to have?

Definitely the ability to cope with stress, along with being able to manage a wide variety of business areas without feeling overwhelmed and importantly, being empathetic toward your staff. Being able to inspire those around you with the business vision, and maintain a positive business culture, are also crucial skills.

What’re your favourite things about working in the Business Management Industry?

Ultimately money makes the world go round, and I view this in a very positive light. I love the fact that every day my business is empowering people to take control of their finances, set meaningful goals and build a plan to reach them. It is an extraordinarily good feeling to know that through our advice we are actually changing lives.
