Alberto Selorio from New South Wales is a student studying Project Management online with Open Colleges. Here, he shares his personal and career journey with us.

He’s a man that’s full of life - he has a loving family, a wife of over 30 years and four adult kids, one of whom takes after his musical father and performs hip hop, while Alberto himself favours barbershop singing!

Alberto takes the things he does in life seriously - but always with a sense of fun, whether it's being engaged on the job, hanging out with his children, performing with his group or studying online to keep his mind active and his options open.

A course in project management to supplement a career in logistics

Alberto works in logistics, but decided to undertake a project management course online with Open Colleges to gain some further skills. This is a pathway that's being taken by increasing numbers of adult learners. The workforce is moving so quickly now that it's essential to constantly learn new skills to continue to be excited and engaged within your career.

Management of people and processes is a highly important role for many organisations. Logistics is the planning, execution, and control of the movement of goods and/or people. It includes the related supporting activities, designed within a structured system to achieve specific objectives.

“The work I do in logistics gives more visibility to connectivity,” says Alberto. He has to manage a team, as well as a warehouse of stock, so communication skills and connectivity are very important to his success. Project management was an area that Alberto thought he could excel in with some additional training.

“I find a lot of personal satisfaction while doing the course – not only for myself but also for the benefit of the company.” As well as the career-based skills Alberto is acquiring, he's also enjoying the process of learning new skills and techniques, and engaging with other students like him.

“For me, education is a never-ending process.”

What does a typical online student look like?

Many people might assume that Alberto doesn’t fit the profile of a typical learner. He’s a businessman with a job, a busy family and lots of hobbies – so how does he find the time? “I love learning. And I love learning project management.” He says that what he has learned has helped him perform better in his job.

As all Open Colleges courses are fully flexible, they can be done at a pace set by the student. “Open Colleges really gives you the opportunity to explore new things,” Alberto says.

“I owe it to myself to keep learning new things, to better myself and to improve myself.”
