Course: Small Business Management Essentials

This course is designed to deliver core business management skills to owner-operators, sole traders or managers of small enterprises. Highly practical, it can be completed in a few short months and may be studied in parallel to beauty, wellness, fitness, design and other courses offered by Cengage Education.

With up to 53% of small business failures in Australia occurring within the first three years of start up (source: ABS), the importance of sound management and planning cannot be overstated. Successful completion of the Small Business Management Essentials course provides students with four nationally recognised units of competency from the Certificate IV in Small Business Management BSB40407, which is part of the BSB07 Business Services Training Package. These cover planning, finance, marketing, and monitoring and managing within the context of a small business operation. Students will also receive a Statement of Attainment.

Entry requirements

Minimum education

Open entry. Previous schooling and academic achievements are not required for entry into this course.

Minimum age

Minimum age of 16 years. If you are under 18 your application must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Computer requirements

Students will need access to a computer and the internet. For students who do not have access to either a computer or the internet please contact a course and careers adviser to discuss alternative methods of communication.

Minimum specifications for the computer are:

  • Microsoft Office 2003 or equivalent and
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 or Mac OS X and
  • CD-ROM drive.

Students will also need access to a printer and the following applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader and
  • Macromedia Flash player.

English language requirements

If English is your second language and you did not complete the last two years of secondary education in English, you are required to provide evidence of English language competency before enrolling into the course. Examples of appropriate evidence are listed below:
