Work Placement

Why is a Work Placement Required?

To help you become job ready, this course includes 120 hours of practical experience in a suitable workplace.

A work placement can be a highly stimulating and rewarding part of the course. It will provide opportunity for you to participate in a real workplace and put into practice the new skills and knowledge that you are learning in your course. Work placement will also give you an insight into particular job roles and responsibilities, so you can be certain this is the right industry for you and that you are right for this industry. In addition, undertaking a work placement helps to ensure the relevance of learning and assessment, and allows you to build useful networks of contacts. These networks can be highly advantageous when looking for work.

To ensure you gain the intended benefit from your work placement, it is important to undertake it in an organisation that is suitable for the course and under the direction of an appropriately experienced supervisor, who can help guide you. While you are expected to identify a suitable organisation for your work placement, Open Colleges can provide advice and direction. An Open Colleges assessor will then review the organisation to ensure it is able to provide the resources and supervision that you need. Once your chosen organisation is approved, the work placement can proceed.

Workplace assessments are conducted by Open Colleges' workplace assessors, who work with both the organisation and you to arrange mutually convenient times to undertake assessment activities.

Insurance

Open Colleges provides insurance cover for the mandatory work placement you undertake as part of your course. This insurance coverage includes Public and Products Liability Insurance as well as Student Personal Accident Insurance.

Open Colleges maintains Public and Products Liability Insurance which covers students undertaking work placements in the employer's workplace.

Known as Student Personal Accident Insurance, the policy covers 'Personal Accidents' in the workplace, and will help put employers' minds at ease for the duration of the work placement.

Copies of the Insurance Certificate of Currency can be requested from an Open Colleges student support officer on 1300 882 121.
